This tour visits Rome and Tuscany and is designed for the AP Art History department at Middleburg High School. Advanced Placement Art History teacher, Heidi Rose has teamed with David McGuffin to design a custom tour visiting many of the required works of art in the Early European and Later European content areas.
This tour visits my all-time favorite destinations in Tuscany and Rome in seven days. You’ll have two days in Florence to walk in the footsteps of Michelangelo and explore the roots of the Renaissance. Then travel to the countryside of Tuscany visiting Siena, Volterra and Pisa. Finally, enjoy two days in Rome to explore its Roman roots and rich Christian heritage.
Your Adventure Starts Here!
DAY 1: Overnight Flight to Rome- Meet your group at the airport for your overnight flight to Rome.
DAY 2: Arrival in Rome – After clearing Italian security and customs, meet your Exploring Europe driver and guide and travel to Rome’s Central train station. We will then board a high-speed train directly to Florence. Once in Florence, enjoy an orientation walk in the historic city center and a little free time for lunch. Later, visit the Galleria Academia, home of Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the statue of David. Enjoy dinner tonight in the historic city center. Sleep 2 nights in Florence. Dinner.
DAY 3: The Best Renaissance art! – Join a guided tour of the Galleria Uffizi which houses the best collection of Renaissance paintings in the world. You’ll then have the remainder of the day free to explore more of Florence on your own. We will meet later tonight for a Tuscan style dinner. Dinner.
DAY 4: Chianti and Siena – We will travel by private bus through the fields, vineyards and olive groves of the Chianti Classico region getting a visual and literal taste of Tuscany. At the American Cemetery in Florence we will reflect on the World War II liberation of Italy and the great sacrifice given by many young American men. Later, arrive in Siena, a grand medieval city and Florence’s arch rival during the Middle Ages. After an informative walking tour of the historic town center you’ll be cut loose on the world famous Il Campo square to enjoy lunch and a free afternoon. We will hop on our bus one last time and travel to Volterra, a charming medieval town rooted in Etruscan traditions. Sleep 2 nights in Volterra.
DAY 5: Volterra – We will begin the day with a guided walking tour of the historic town center learning a little about the history from early Etruscan times, through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and into the 21st century. The afternoon is all yours! This is a great time to visit another museum, do some souvenir shopping, or just relax and enjoy Italy. Then, prepare your taste buds for my favorite dining experience in all of Italy as we savor the cuisine of the Del Duca family ristorante. Dinner.
DAY 6: Pisa and Rome- After breakfast, enjoy a visit to Pisa for a look at the famous leaning tower. Then, we will hop on the train and head back to Rome. Join your guide for a look at the Roman-era Colosseum and forum. Later, meet for dinner in the historic city center. Sleep 2 nights in Rome. Dinner.
DAY 7: Vatican City – Today, you will visit the Vatican Museum. Enjoy an in-depth tour of this vast treasure trove of the world’s finest works of art, capped off with an awe-inspiring look at Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Then, visit the massive St. Peter’s Basilica, the world’s largest Christian church. After lunch, we’ll begin our walking tour of Rome’s historic central core, visiting the Pantheon and several other sights in the area. We will cap off our tour experience with a grand farewell dinner at one of my favorite ristoranti. Dinner.
DAY 8: Heading home – Enjoy a private bus transfer to Rome’s airport for your flight home. Arrivederci a Roma!
