Travel Talk Tuesday: November 14, 2023 – Derry or Londonderry? County Donegal and the North Ireland Coast

PART 1: Derry, also known as Londonderry, is a small city straddling the border of The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Strategically placed on the banks of the River Foyle, Londonderry has seen its fair share of battles, conflicts, and controversies. The city’s most iconic feature is its intact 17th-century city walls, which offer a glimpse into its turbulent past. Steeped in history, Derry played a significant role in the Troubles, a period of conflict in Northern Ireland, but has since emerged as a symbol of peace and reconciliation. David recently walked the walls with a local guide, and he shares the experience in this episode.

PART 2: County Donegal stretched north from Derry to Malin Head, the northernmost point on the island.  Donegal is loaded with ancient historic sites, and beautiful countryside. It provides an off-the-beaten-path look at Ireland.

PART 3: Northern Ireland’s Country Antrim, premier attraction is the Giant’s Causeway.  A series of hexagonal basalt pillars jut out of the land and sea, forming an underwater “bridge” all the way to Scotland.  Additionally, nearby Dunluce Castle, Carrick-a-rede rope bridge, and the Great Hedges can fill a great day out on the north coast.
