The Irish were under English domination from 1177 until 1922. That’s more than 700 years! It wasn’t until the 20th century that the Irish broke away and formed their own country. David takes a virtual walk down O’Connell Street, and puts all the pieces together leading up to Irish independence.

The Sagrada Família Basilica (Holy Family Church) is located in Barcelona, Spain, and has been under construction since 1882. As you can see from the image here, it is still not complete. Antoni Gaudí took over the project in 1883 applying his Modernist architectural style and ideas and completely changed the original Gothic concept of the church. Gaudí died in 1926, and his disciple Domènec Sugranyes took over the project. Five generations have watched the construction progress, and now the Basilica is scheduled for completion in 2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death.
In this episode, David gives an introduction and overview of Barcelona. The city sprawls from the mountains to the sea, with Mount Tibidabo to the west and the Mediterranean sea to the east. Between these two landmarks, the city sprawls in the flat valley, with more than 1.6 million people. The hub of the city is Plaça de Cataluña.
